Powerlessness

Here in the late afternoon, with the overcast sun fading, the power went out for over an hour. It was out down the entire length of my street. I went out and talked to the neighbors, all out for the same reason.

The power was out long enough that I kindled a fire for warmth, and gathered together the flashlight and candles for when it was darker yet.

Almost anti-climactically, it's come back on before full sunset.

I always feel cheated when I'm that prepared for powercuts, and then the power returns before dark. Bring it!

Hmm, that's just given me an idea for our Halloween party - though out here the days are getting longer, and Halloween is mostly conducted in the light. Great for kids out trick-or-treating (where it's slowly catching on), but not so good for spooky.

Still, it's a terrific occasion for telephone calls, at least until the battery in your cell phone fails.
