Eurovision again

Hurray! For the second year running, my favorite song from the videos managed to win the competition!* Azerbaijan it is. I word it that way since actually, the performance was weaker than in the semi-final or video. I voted for it in the semi-final, but not the final as a result, however much I like the song itself and the pretty use of pyrotechnics on stage.

But not as weak as Blue for the UK. They had a decent song and they swamped it with a backdrop which overwhelmed the singers, and then had sound problems. On the other end of the spectrum, Switzerland and Estonia really should have done better than they did. At least it was a solidly mixed field this year, which made it interesting in the voting. Am astonished that Italy came second: a good welcome-back after 14 years away from the contest. The Ukraine song did remarkably well given all I can remember about it is the amazing sand artist. Germany made such intelligent use of the backdrop screens; nicely done.

Top gymanistic feats while singing: The lead singer for Russia did a backflip *while singing*!!! Russia was technically very impressive, but had a weak song. The lead singer for Denmark did a whole lap, to the mini-stage and back, also while singing.

We did a lot of recasting while watching this year, pairing the decent song with better singers where they were needed. Still so, so relieved that Graham Norton did not talk over the songs, as he did his first year hosting the contest. I really loved the postcards, which made real places look like toy miniatures.

* So this must mean I have very middlebrow, very European taste?

Good to know you've adjusted to your adoptive continent, anyway. :) Tastes vary, of course -- I wasn't overly keen on the Azerbaijani entry, personally -- but it was a mixed night, which is no bad thing.

The sand artist, by the way, is fantastic. It's definitely worth finding her winning Ukraine's Got Talent entry on YouTube if you haven't already done so.

Ah, apologies -- missed the earlier link. I think it probably bears repeating in case anyone else reading isn't aware of her work, though. :)

I'm going to pretend I didn't read this! (Because of the time difference, we don't get to see the final for some hours yet.)

I mostly enjoyed being snarky on FB this year - the problem with Eurovision alone (and with having to finish my work last night because today is a very long day). Still, it was fun :). And Azerbaijan were wearing white, so if I had been playing the drinking game, I would have been very drunk!

I thought Italy sounded even better than he did when we heard it last week; and second doesn't seem bad for a piece with not much of a floor show. France's--or Corsica's--song is still good, but the set's weak, the singer's pretty, and what's with the star-trek uniform?

I have no idea why France was supposedly the favorite going into the contest. I mean, it is not a bad piece, but it is not *that* strong either, and was a bit weaker in the actual contest than on the video.

Italy did sound good, but it still astounds me that he ended up with second place!

After listening to France's piece for hours last night in bed, as an ear-worm, I want to correct what I said. The song's not particularly good, but it's very effective.

We enjoyed the whole thing in our usual frivolous manner - including only judging it on the final performances and having an ambivalent attitude to our own entry - glad we ended up on the left-hand side of the leader board but not convinced we deserved to be there.

The usual cliches were there in force enough to enable us to consume copious amounts of alcohol. Although costume and key changes were not as strongly represented this year.

Costume changes: The only entry which had them, had TWO absolutely amazing, magical costume changes. But it was a weak song and rightly eliminated in the semi-finals. The costume changes were really the best reason to have kept it.

I really liked Germany's, although I am sad that Lena lost so much weight between last year and this year!
