Songs about things

In a moment of idle thought, I realized I could think of songs related to all aspects of my dissertation, with the exception of eyeglasses. Are there any songs out there either about eyeglasses, or with some major references to them in them? It would be even better if it were used as an analogy than just in a physical description of someone.

As you might be able to deduce from this thought, I have indeed accomplished some real work and writing this morning. It won't last though. The adventures of St. Wilfrith and Latin class call.

Isn't there some 80s song about sunglasses at night? Other than that, the person to ask would be my former Smith roommate, Jen Anderson--seemed she could come up with a song for just about anything ;)

Sunglasses
That's true, there is. It's a good thought.

I have no idea when sunglasses were invented/first made, but it's well after the time period I'm looking at. Colored glass has been around since as long as there has been glass, but I don't know when it was applied to eyeglasses for the specific purpose of protecting the eyes from the sun. Anyways, for most of my period, eyeglasses weren't even made out of glass - they were made out of carved rock crystal. Perhaps colored glass isn't even the issue, but plastic? I'll have to read up on it now!

Still, I suspect that if I looked at the lyrics of the songs I've thought about on time too closely, many of them will require electric clocks, so I shouldn't be too picky!

Re: Sunglasses
Rock crystal, huh? All things considered (defects and so on) I'd be surprised they were much more effective than just seeing badly. I guess one makes do with what one has!

And I was only joking, really, about the sunglasses song ;) Still, one would imagine that those folks in sunny places like Italy would have thought of sunglasses sooner rather than later...where would you go to find out information like that anyhow?

Well, I don't think there's a lot of analogy involved, but...
"Lucy In Disguise (With Glasses)"

1968, John Fred and His Playboy Band

Come to think of it, I don't really remember most of the lyrics to this song, so I don't know how much of an appearance the glasses in question make. I do know she loses them in the end, though.

More of a kid's song, probably no good but ...
I doubt that this is the kind of thing you are looking for, I guess you are looking more for a proper song that has been in the charts or some such thing, however:

The Quartermaster's stores

There were eggs, eggs, eggs with hairy legs,
In the stores,
In the stores,
There were eggs, eggs, eggs with hairy legs,
In the Quartermaster's stores.

Chorus : (after each verse)
My eyes are dim, I cannot see,
I have not brought my specs with me,
I have - not - brought - my - specs - with - me!

There was cheese, cheese, cheese with knobbly knees.....

There was bacon, bacon, unless I was mistaken.......

There was bread, bread, harder than your head .......

There were fleas, fleas, eating all the peas .........

There was gravy, gravy, enough to float the navy.....

There was butter, butter, running down the gutter ....

There were rats, rats, big as alley cats ........

There were mice, mice, digging in the rice ....

You then make up anything you like, often using the names of friends in strange situations. There loads of different verses out there, not everyone agrees on the same verses.
