Ice cream sandwiches

We started discussing ice cream sandwiches last night, apropos of the next Android OS. C. wasn't entirely sure what an ice cream sandwich even is.

Save me a potentially-fruitless trip to the grocery story, oh LJ: are ice cream sandwiches commercially available in the UK?

You know, I haven't actually looked for one since moving here, but Wikipedia seems to suggest not:
"Ireland, England and Wales

In Ireland, England and Wales an ice cream wafer, consisting of a small block of ice cream between two rectangular wafer biscuits, was a popular alternative to a cone up until the 1970s. Since then it has declined and is now rarely seen.[citation needed]"

We await confirmation or denial from an actual native of the UK with bated breath.
I've now added another thing to my list of 'foodstuffs I have a hankering for' to insist upon eating during my upcoming visit back to the USA. I'm really psyched that I'm actually stopping off for the night to visit friends in Chicago... REAL Chicago deep dish pizza!! and here I woulda just been satisfied with the 'cover version' as done at any of the 'Chicago style' pizza joints around the Midwest.

If they aren't available here I will, for the first time, make them myself with chocolate chip cookies.

Like you, I have gone years without missing them, but thanks to the power of suggestion, I am now missing them!

Mmm, homemade! I find the cookies on the pre-made ones are too soggy, anyway, so that will be much better.

Sod chocolate chip cookies. Two ginger snaps. One lump of vanilla ice cream. Heaven.

I'd have said the same -- used to be called ice-cream wafer but not that popular these days so can't remember when I last saw one.

I'm happy to confirm this - except that my memory says not prepackaged. You unwrapped the block of ice cream, and set it between the two wafers you'd been given, and so ate same and got ice cream all over your fingers and if you were young and/or clumsy likely lost the block altogether onto the floor or your clothes or...

And people wonder why I don't like ice cream.
