Ice cream sandwiches

We started discussing ice cream sandwiches last night, apropos of the next Android OS. C. wasn't entirely sure what an ice cream sandwich even is.

Save me a potentially-fruitless trip to the grocery story, oh LJ: are ice cream sandwiches commercially available in the UK?

From my upbringing, that's a hand-sized fluffy doughnut covered in sugar. Is that the same thing you mean?

Nope - choux bun, topped with chocolate, sliced in half and filled with cream. They use something artificial these days - confectionary cream? Not whipped double cream. And it's not the same.

I realize my grasp of elephant anatomy is poor. I was thinking of elephant ears, not feet, which are unfamiliar to me.

Which reminds me of my dad's joke about knowing the difference between a letter box and an elephant's bottom, which is definitely a cue to get the $%$$^ back tot marking.

Is your elephant's foot like a bear claw without the almond paste inside?
Looks like the UK version is what I'd call a cream puff with chocolate. Now I miss custard eclairs. Not that they can't be found in Canada, I just shouldn't have them.

I figured out I was thinking of elephant ears, not feet. Like beaver tails, the internet tells me.

Like fillingless bear claws, but the doughnut kind, not the pastry variety.

Still available, truly. Look for bakers that claim to be selling real cream cream cakes.

I've been in those - all the ones I've tried in the last decade or most has had the wrong kind of cream. The fresh cream cakes tend to be different from choux buns. Where I've tried. Or my palette has shifted. (That's probably the wrong kind of palette. Taste buds thing)

(Shop ones are better, but the pastry's wrong... and the topping too sticky. Ideally the topping cracks)

Bakers are thin on the ground here - the decent one is more interested in teas (indeed selling tea and coffee beans) and stopped selling bread unless ordered; I will try The Custard Tart and Bensons.

The Rainham and WhistaBubble ones I tried were both confectionary cream, but there is another baker further along Oxford Street I tend to get to later.

The baker I want to call Bensons have them... Yum. Although I'm sure the chocolate covering was hard when I had them in the East Midlands.
