Ice cream sandwiches

We started discussing ice cream sandwiches last night, apropos of the next Android OS. C. wasn't entirely sure what an ice cream sandwich even is.

Save me a potentially-fruitless trip to the grocery story, oh LJ: are ice cream sandwiches commercially available in the UK?

Probably blanking them out. They were sticky and greasy and tasted nothing like ice cream, or, in the case of the half-cream/half-pink ones, strawberry. Definitely marketed for undiscriminating children. They were probably full of chemicals that would be banned today.

What the pink stuff tasted like was "strawberry" flavoured medicine. After over half a century the memory is still vivid.

They somehow managed to melt without losing shape, and tasted almost entirely unlike ice cream. On our honeymoon in 1978 the hotel in Folkstone actually served them as dessert, with wobbly red jelly that tasted of nothing much.

British food has improved over the years, thank heavens.
