A slow-in-coming realization

Thought #1: I'm working on my dissertation. I can't find all the books I need for this current chapter in my university's library system.

Thought #2: I'm taking a week off in Engand later this month to go to a friend's wedding. We're flying to London.

Realization: I could spend a day or two in London and make use of the BL and find some of those books not available in my local libraries, especially if I check on their availability before I go over there. I'm astonished I actually hadn't thought of this before today.

Oooo! BL!
Oooo! The best moment in a trip to the British Library is that first one when you go into the round room FULL of books and books and books...

Re: Oooo! BL!
Not any more.

The old BL reading room is now the centerpiece to the new lovely atrium at the British Museum. The new BL at St. Pancras is very different, quite layered and divided up into reading areas based on topic, all in separate rooms - nothing like the old room, but there's a good gift shop (my mousemat is from it!) and an exhibit of their most popular documents, everything from the Beowulf ms. to Beatles lyrics scribbled on restaurant napkins.

Actually, I didn't become a BL reader until the new library, so I never got to experience the old one as a patron. The old room still is covered in books however, and is still used, although it's something like a reference library for BL staff now - can't remember exactly.

How peculiar... one of my friends is going to Toronto later on this month to get married...
