A package from Unpredictable Fish

My Dragon Mango shirt arrived yesterday! It feature a major portion of the cast of characters, plus two young dragons thrown in for good measures on the sides.

I certainly erred on the large side of it fitting me. The next size down would have been plenty big enough. Now all one of my friends can be jealous of my lovely new shirt.

I'm very jealous an can't wait to see it. However, I would be more envious if it were a stuffed Dragon Mango sheep...;)

Stuffed Sheep
Some day, young padawan, some day.

There isn't even a sheep on the shirt though, so I guess you don't need to be all THAT jealous. (But thank you for obliging me and being jealous. I appreciate it.)

Will it help...
... if I say that I'm jealous that you can order shirts from North American based webcomics without crippling shipping charges?

I was going to order a shirt from the shop supporting Elfwood, only to find that shipping was the same cost as the shirt :-(

Re: Will it help...
so what you need to do is find somebody who's about to come across the the UK and ask nicely...

When is it you're [likely to be] coming across? :-)

Re: Will it help...
Dunno right now, Hopefully they'll give me a couple of weeks notice. So, depending on how friendly Canadian customs are being, I can probably get something delivered here in time.

Re: Will it help...
I can order shirts from North American-based webcomics without crippling charges. But only if I keep each of my orders on the correct side of the border. US orders I send to my parents, while Canadian orders can go directly to me.

I've had some really lousy experiences with people generously trying to mail me gifts from the US. I don't mind paying the 15 percent taxes, which is due on any gift being sent to Canada worth more than $35. I do mind the handling charges. Things sent via the post office aren't so bad. They charge a $5 handling fee, although on top of a $35 package, that's a substantial additional charge. UPS and Fedex have been nightmares, however. One of them (can't remember which) charged me a $25 handling fee, which was much, much, much more than the taxes due on that particular package.

As a consequence, I've been encouraging my family and friends only to send me cheap gifts, or hold them for when I come to visit. And so I generally try to keep my orders to each side of the border. The shipping charges from the US to Canada and vice versa aren't bad though, at least. Sometimes they're even equal.

Hmmm... I rememberone fantasy artist talking about the problems she had trying to take paintings in to Canada from the US just to display them at a convention, with no intent on selling them. Apparantely she reckoned that it's easier to get them in to the UK than Canada...

Re: Will it help...
It's true, it is. But just think of it in pounds. If you were ordering it in the US ($5 shipping) vs the UK ($10 shipping), you would save all of 2 pounds 50p.

In answer to your other question, we might be going over to England in early July. But keep in mind that if you order something from the US to Canada ($7 - only saving just over a pound now), if they mark it as a commercial item (in which case there's no exemption level for cost value), there will be 15 percent taxes, plus C$5 to add on to the price - so it's actually cheaper to send it directly to the UK - well, depending on what import charges are like there.

If I knew I was going back to the US before then, obviously that really would be cheaper! But my parents are leaving for Venice in a week, so odds are I wouldn't.

International shipping is entirely too complicated!

Re: Will it help...
Thank you for the offer, although my question was aimed at Heather :-)

To be honest, I was grumbling for the sake of grumbling as much as anything else -- ordering one of the shirts from Ellen Million works out checper than, say, ordering one from Seven Tenths... including postage... Something in me just balks when the cost of postage rises over 50% of the cost of the item itself...

Yes, I realized that moments after I posted my reply. Still, I figured the more people you can take advantage of for things like this the better!

Currency disparagement
I want to apologize for undervaluing the US dollar. Shows I don't operate well in multiple currencies! The US dollar is worth something like 65 or 70 pence last I knew. In other words, US$5 would be worth something over UKP 3, not less. Also, last I knew, it was about C$2.2 to the UKP.
