Librarians, incoming!

The American Library Association annual meeting is taking place here in Toronto this coming weekend. Clearly it's a big event, since they're taking over the Metro Toronto Convention Center, the same venue as this coming Labor Day's WorldCon. A number of blogging librarians will be in town for the event. (As Library Stuff observes. The same Library Stuff who lists both Toronto and Iowa in a list of forthcoming conference.)

(Just think, Kuomori and rhiannon76 - those could have been two different incentives to come visit!)

A 1715 Plea to Translate (Good) Latin Works into English

'Tis pity such a Volume should lie by, imprison'd in a Library, lock'd up in Latin, as fast as in chains; for this is a Loss far greater than any it makes mention of. A Work so big with Diversion, and so exceeding Useful, is too good a Morsel for Moths and Worms; and (if it can perish) deserves a better Grave than Dust and Rubbish. This is one Reason why I taught it in English, being not a little desirous to blazon its Worth, and to rescue it from the Ignominy of so ignoble a Fate.

(This is from the translator's introduction to a book. The title of the book is exceedingly long, so it should suffice to say it's Panciroli's History with Salmuth's commentary. I don't know who the translator was.)

Oh, the hopes and dreams I lived among...

Somewhere back at home, my parents have an old, worn cassette tape copied from somewhere of the soundtrack to the musical of the Little Prince. I still remember most of the songs, even thought I can't remember listening to the tape too often. I wish I had a good recording of it now. Yes, I did read the book when I was young. But I remember the songs better.
