Fishy Circumstances

Bastille Day in Paris 2011

We went to Paris for a couple of days the other week with SmithKatie, arriving on the evening of Bastille Day.

I learned from the one other day we went to the Champs de Mars for Bastille Day fireworks with whatifoundthere. We chose our hotels in part because they were within a mile of the Champs de Mars, and thus entirely walkable. We stuck to wide boulevards which could handle the million people leaving the field at the end of the evening. We had a much better sense of what might constitute a good view. We made it there with an hour-and-a-half to spare before the fireworks began.

They were spectacular, choreographed this year to the scores of musical comedies. We hoped that the 25% of songs we didn't know were from French musicals, since the ones we recognized were from English language ones. Who knew that fireworks could fall like Gene Kelly dances?

Other things during that trip: Meeting up with tamaranth and ladymoonray, having discovered we were all already in Paris. Eating Pierre Hermé pastries. Watching toy boats in the fountain in the Jardin du Luxembourg. C being even more excited than I was at seeing the Musée des Arts et Metiers, since it included a Cray supercomputer. Seeing Playmobil used to illustrate a point on medieval toy swords in the Epee exhibit at the Musée du Moyen Age. Seeing a model of the Bastille carved from a rock taken from the Bastille at the Musée de Carnevalet. Fantastic falafel at King Falafel Palace. Brunch at the Musée Jacquemart-Andrée underneath a Tiepolo painting purchased from the Veneto in the nineteenth-century. Seeing friends in the midst of apartment-buying.
