Units of Brazil

This week's Economist has now twice used Brazil as a basic unit of population. Its population is slightly larger than that of Nigeria - which I knew was fairly populous - but also the state of Uttar Pradesh. I knew India was populous, but that drove it partially home in a whole different light. If Uttar Pradesh were its own country, it would be the world's sixth most populous.

(Online double-checkng tells me Nigeria has about 30 million people fewer than Brazil, and that the population of Uttar Pradesh is larger than that of Brazil. Big numbers, regardless. The US has a population of about 1.6 Brazils. China's is seven Brazils. The Philippines is about half a Brazil.)
