In brief

It's been a busy and preoccupying three days. On Friday, a dear friend of my family committed suicide. Having said that, there's more resolution to the whole thing than that statement alone would leave you to believe. I'll write more on Louise later. She was an amazing person and I miss her. The Des Moines Register has written a decent obituary and columnist Rekha Basu wrote an even better column about her. I recommend the Basu column especially.

I flew back to Toronto on Friday - it was an uneventful flight. Jenene visited for the weekend - she was already here when I arrived. We all went out to the local very-generous-portions Portugese restaurant near us.

Saturday was all spent cleaning - I've never had such a clean aparmtent and it's wonderful. Now if only it was organized as well as clean. Saturday was our long-awaited deck party which went well, and our deck finally received the appreciation due to it. It's really a very good deck. At one point the refridgerator was entirely full of beer (which I don't drink) but by the end, there were two bottles left, so we were not saddled with something I can't help drink. Food worked out fairly well, but next time I'd have more savory foods. Also, next time I'll endeavor to make sure ALL the directions are correct early on. I had one error in it - I typed Bathurst instead of Dufferin and the streets are probably a mile apart from each other. One friend went to Bathurst and then walked all the way - this a day after he moved. I felt very badly about it. But generally it was good. C. lit the chiminea.

Today involved lots of sleep, Jenene leaving, talking to my sister who's back from Italy with lots of cheese, wine, and grappa, and going by the Hot & Spicy festival downtown - which wasn't quite what we thought it would be, but sufficed for lunch and fresh air. I came back and napped again. Something I've learned today: it's legal to import cheese into the U.S. as long as it's not wet cheese (like fresh mozarella or cottage cheese). Parmesan is perfectly legal.
