Google's new Blogsearch tool, now in beta, only presents search results which are fond on blogs. One of its biggest intended uses is to help the "general public" find out "what the blogs are saying".* It has some bugs still, including the current egregious one of ignoring LiveJournal's no-robot flags, a big no-no for a good, self-respecting search engine. The good news is that it will be fixed; the bad news is that it's already indexed huge amounts of material which shouldn't be.

A vanity search was, of course, required. Searching for what's out there on oneself is a healthy thing to do at regular intervals anyways, just to know what other people could know about you; and I do, once in a while. That's why it was a real revelation to troll through the final few pages of results and find a slew of things I hadn't encountered before. There were no unpleasant surprises, but there certainly were some revelations hiding in there, the biggest of which was that, supposed, my weblog was in the top 20 LJs for GoogleRank somewhen back in 2003.

You should try it too. Not because Google is still fashionable, despite its disproportionate market share. You should try it because you should know what other people can know about you. It's good internet self-defense.

* Many of the big news sites have featured articles on what the blogs are saying about various major world events, in addition to running blogs of their own.

Doesn't seem to like me... which is good :) It keeps pulling Momiji from Fruit Basket and nothing from Blue Seed.

I'm outdated.

It's interesting that if you Google "henchminion" and then click on "more results from www.livejournal.com" when you get to the link to my blog, the list of blog entries is in a completely different order from the one you get by entering "henchminion" into Google Blogsearch. I wonder why that is?

I found that the subject of one of my fencing photographs has found his picture and posted a link to it on his LJ. I was very happy, I love it when people see their own picturs, and left him a comment offering to send the other pictures of him that I have.

Dangers of academics blogging?
By the way, have you noticed any of the 'Ivan Tribble' uproar about academic bloggers and how they'll never get jobs? Rebecca, at '(a)musings of a grad student has a survey out for academic bloggers. The whole thing started in the Chronicle of Higher Education and has snowballed, with the Crooked Timber folk getting in on it. Anyway, since lots of your flist seem to be academics -- some on the market -- I thought I'd mention it. I'll post more info at my places after I'm ready for the new term.
