Today's favorite typo of my own making is contained in this sentence - "Wells were particularly necessary for monasteries, many of which owned and managed extensive farmlands."

Other observations:
  • Poilâne makes extraordinarily good rye-currant bread.
  • "Manga head" is a new line of hair gel. It sounds almost surreal enough to be Japanese - but it isn't.

What is the typo? I've looked and looked and I can't find it!

I aim to frustrate! No spellchecker can catch this typo. It pleases me so much because it makes sense even though it wasn't what I had intended to type.

Wells should have been bells.

But... but... wells makes more sense! You need water to manage farmlands, not bells. I'm confused. :-/

So true. And a great many if one's farmland is extensive. A river-based irrigation system might be more effective, in fact.

In the middle of paragraph on bells and time-telling, an offhand comment on wells was gratuitous information. Bells are useful for alerting people to what time it is over large areas of land - the sound carries, especially if the bells are large and hung in an elevated bell tower. This is especially true if the folks in question don't have a watch or mobile handy - say, if they were living in the twelfth century.

Aaah - thank-you! I was curious as well as to what this mysterious typo was! :-)

And yes, bells makes more sense.

Wouldn't it be great if the hair gel went beyond the "manga" label and referenced specific anime hair-do's? We could have Ryoko from 'Tenchi Muyo' for girls and 'Yu-Gi-Oh!' for boys. *snickers to self*
