From the Novum Organum. First Book of Aphorisms. No. 49. Graham Rees, trans.

"The human intellect is not a dry light but is contaminated by the will and affections; and this begets As-you-like-it Sciences*. For man would rather believe what he wishes to be true."

* "Ad quod vult Scientias"

I love it! Had to talk about "as we know it" history today -- you know, the stuff 'everybody knows' so that we base anything we say in class on those premises? A sequel to the discussion yesterday that started with "Hindsight is always 20-20. It's not surprising that no one in Germany did anything about the Holocaust, because people were much more anti-Semitic then, unlike now, when it's bad if you aren't pro-Israel ... Even if they knew what was going on, they wouldn't have cared"

Not my best teaching moment ... the bit where I said, "I think the people who lived within smelling distance of giant effing human barbecues knew something was going on."

I am so not cut out for modern history/current events

Hey, I'm going to go up to london the weekend before my b-day (oct 11th) and I thought I'd tell you in advance to see if you are free. A lot of my reading friends moved there so it's a great opportunity to see people again.

That's a spiffy icon! Where's it from?

It's from Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Allegory of Good Government in the Sala della Pace in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. I scanned in the image and cropped it to suit. I figure it makes for a good dissertation icon, since Temperance plays such a big role in it.

Sorry! The last few days have been crazy and I wasn't online at all yesterday. Just 'cause I'm panicking though doesn't mean I need to make yours worse! I'll read and respond right now.
