Planes

Several friends of mine flew for the first time in the past week or two, which got me to thinking.

i also missed out asking WHY people have flown. At this rate, another poll may be necessary to alleviate my curiousity.

Any others I'm missing, as long as the odds of a followup poll are on the rise? I think I'd know if anyone on my f'list had flown in a spaceship...

I guessed for 15 years ago, but it might have been more or less than that when I first flew. The first time I went on a comercial airplane was 14 years ago, but my parents have pilots liscences, and for all I know I first flew when I was 0, I certainly remember being dragged up a lot as a child - I have no idea how often, but it's almost certain more than 40. It's cool to be above the clouds, but I never feel safe in light aircraft, so I'm the only one in my family who doesn't know how to fly. Big airplanes don't bother me, though, I've never really been scared of flying in them.

You could add a types of planes section...DC10, 747, Concorde...

Yep. When my family was being flown to England to live my stepdad's company used to fly everyone business class...there was some problem with our (regular) plane the morning that we were to leave, so British Airways offered to fly all of thier First- and Business-class passengers on the Concorde the following day. It was a happy accident, that's for sure. Imagine - New York to London in something like 3 hours! And they fed us shrimp cocktail and filet mignon.

Assuming you mean flown in(side) an aeroplane, that is, rather than on the plane. If anyone has flown on a plane, please explain -- and whether you were perching on/clinging to wing, fuselage, float, tail fin?

I used to keep count of Atlantic crossings when we lived in Europe and were traveling back and forth between the US and Europe a lot when we were on vacation fromschool. I've lost count somewhere along the way though - the last count sometime in jr. high was 22.

Since then I've taken several trips to Europe and flown around the U.S. itself quite a bit. I may, or may not have gone up for a ride in a hot air balloon at a fair at some point. I'm suddenly faced with the disconcerting fact that I don't remember.

I've never flown in a private plane, though I have flown in some smaller planes, including planes with propellers. Our flight from Nuremberg to Munich on Air Dolomiti was -so- much fun. Hah.

I never used to be scared of flying in big planes until we hit turbulence back in 1999 coming back from Christmas in France with Sabs' family. That was a year of big wind and ice storms across Europe and our plane fell for what felt like 30 seconds over England, though it probably wasn't even that long. Since then I've started to get a creeping fear of flying, but I can still stay on top of it with slow breathing and distracting myself while in flight.

I dislike flying for an entirely different set of reasons since I've become a parent. I never want to fly alone with a cranky, screaming 2 year old who hates being pinned down, ever again.

I'm negotiating with Sabs for a trip to France in the spring - his fear of flying is much more severe than mine and may necessitate knocking him out with a rolling pin immediately before take-off.

I read this article in today's Observer and thought immediately of your post. First ever flight at age 109. Amazing.

I piloted a glider once when I 15ish - had to wear a parachute, but only to make the seat comfy as we weren't going to be high enough. First flight was when I was a baby, so how long ago it was is limited by my age. Now I find flights boring. T.
