In the past few years, I've taken to making easy-to-obtain New Year's resolutions. They're more satisfying that way. So today, I'm happy to report, I fulfilled this year's goal: "for the benefit of Canada and all its allies", I have a PhD.

That's one of the easy ones?

Thank you!

It was only an easy resolution for this year because as of the beginning of the year, I'd already defended my dissertation and only had corrections to turn in. Any year before that, it would have been a far more challenging resolution to make.

Thank you! I can't quite believe I'm not a student anymore, having been one for more-or-less my entire life.

Can we finally call you Dr. Owlfish now? Congratulations -- it's a fantastic feeling, isn't it?

Thank you! C. took all of them, so it's up to him. Given the ceremony logistics, I left my camera behind for the day.

Congratualtions! What's the next easy one? Wipe out malaria?
Jun. 12th, 2006 10:59 pm (UTC)
I've gone with obtainable New Year's goals for the past three years. This year, it was the PhD I was essentially already done with. Last year's goal was to move to London, which I was intended to do anyways. The hardest goal was my first one in a way, which was to buy a scale, because I didn't have to do it for any other reason.

I'll see what I can do about malaria next year.

Yay! Well done!

... I took a ten year 'break' from study, but now I'm back I love it. Things are very different though from when I was a 'kid'. Hopefully I will still have time and monies after this course to do what you did, and carry on.

What adventures next?
Jun. 12th, 2006 10:57 pm (UTC)
I think it's better to take a breath off at some point, to choose to keep studying because it's what you really want to be doing, as opposed to doing it out of habit.

Adventures! I have a research project on the go, and soon I'll start working on revising dissertation bits for publication. Meanwhile, I'll be applying for jobs. It is indeed an adventure.
