It depends. Sometimes they are both.

seconded

(a good pun, though, is a work of art)

Agreed. Sometimes they really impress me, and sometimes I just want to strangle the punster.

Indeed! And sometimes irritation is its own art form. ;)

Unfashionable as this is in certain circles, I hate puns with the white hot fire of a thousand suns.

Puns made by me are obviously art. Those made by others may well be irritation.

It depends. Mostly they're just tedious irritations. But sometimes (when some thought and effort has been put into them) they can be quite clever: Brian Ameringen has a t-shirt which reads "H H Munro was a wry swine", for example, which amused me more than I would have expected when I first saw it.

I think, on balance, I don't like puns, but I often find word-play entertaining. It's entirely subjective as to which category a given example belongs, of course.

'Tis an artform to create the most irritating pun possible.

This explains a lot about my sense of humour.

I guess it depends on whether the person creating the pun is trying to make people appreciate wit or go 'argh!'. i.e. stupid puns vs subtle puns.

Personally, I just like to punish people wit'em...

Most of them have good taste!

(And the rest of them I indulge.)

My friend handful_ofdust's husband makes puns of such excruciating greatness (and always has done) that whenever anyone makes a pun, I say "Steve!" in a agonized way. I like his puns, what can I say?

Puns are art when they're good ones. But most of the time they're bad, and bad ones are irritating.

Ah, they can be both.

After all, 'I don't know if it's art, but I know what I like' can be applied, no? :D

You can't use radio buttons for this poll...you need checkboxes...or a slider. It's either both - art and irritation ..or ...somewhere in between, depending on the purveyor of the pun.

My favorite puns are usually multi-lingual. I'm not sure about this, but my best friend from Japan (Highschool) once told me that the word for bread is pun. So her family would ask each other if they wanted the pun well-done.
