Eurovision - The UK Decides

I've finally used BBC's iPlayer, and it sure is useful. I missed the UK deciding on its Eurovision entry on Saturday night, and managed to remain unspoiled by the resolution until I watched it tonight.

LoveShy - Consistent song, but not hugely exciting. Eye-catching costuming, with still-somewhat trendy-for-Eurovision SM-lite elements.
The Revelations - Good refrain, mediocre verses, solid look.
Rob McVeigh - Who chose your song? I KNOW you can do better.
Simona Armstrong - Cute! Quirky! Lovely vocal harmonics and a reasonably strong song. Fab hair.
Andy Abraham - Good singer, fine performance, song reminds me of a melange of several others.
Michelle Gayle - Fun, lively, on the border between silly and serious, very catchy.

I was certain Michelle Gayle was going to win, although I was hoping Simona would give her serious competition for it. Instead, it's Andy Abraham, and I don't rate the UK's chances at Eurovision this year all that highly because of it. We'll see come May....

I find myself deeply annoyed by songs that have a great refrain and lousy verses. I feel so conflicted about buying them and listening to them.

I'd prefer it if they pulled a Fastball and just made a song that's pretty much all chorus, over and over.

I agree with most of this, except that I interpreted Simona's vocal harmonics as her not being able to hold a tune - which is a shame, as it was a good song and she's almost mad enough to win Eurovision.

It's also a shame the public voted for their favourite, rather than the song that could've actually won (Michelle Gayle). Oh well. It could've been so much worse :)

I was hoping that Simona WOULD win, just to throw a bit of Eastern Europe back at the Eastern Europeans ;)

I can remember most of the songs from Making Your Mind Up, but I haven't a shred of the winning song in my brain. This is not a good sign!

I thought Simona could sing - when I mentioned harmonics, I was thinking of the backup singers as well.
